"Though I did not know it then, nor would I come to realize it for many years, what transpired in the fall of 1960 in New Orleans would forever change my life and help shape a nation. When I think back on that time and all that has occurred since, I realize a lot has changed. I also know there is much more to be done. That fateful walk to school began a journey, and I have now developed a vision to continue moving forward," said Ruby Bridges. This courageous little girl went to school like every other day not knowing that she would be making the huge leap to the equality between blacks and whites. As well as, breaking the wall of segregation so black children and white children could learn and play together like they were meant to. No one expected six-year-old Ruby Bridges to be the one to begin breaking this barrier. But when she did, it would eventually lead to decreasing discrimination against African Americans greatly. Throughout history, there have been a myriad of people impacting societies, but one that stands out from the rest, and deserves the Civil Rights Award, is Ruby Bridges due to her courage on the day she broke the barrier of segregation by going to school and continued efforts on making the world a better place.
